The states
In order to find out what state ranks highest in education, one must consider what the states with the best education systems have in common. These states typically invest more money in education, have higher teacher salaries, smaller class sizes, and higher high school graduation rates. According to the latest data, the state that ranks highest in education is Massachusetts.
The states with the best schools
There are many factors to consider when trying to decide which state has the best schools. Some people might place emphasis on standardized test scores, while others might give more weight to the high school graduation rate.
24/7 Wall St. reviewed several measures to identify the states with the best schools. We considered data on test scores, high school graduation rates, enrollment in and funding for preschool programs, and per-pupil spending among other measures.
Massachusetts ranks as the best state for education. The state’s students boast the highest math and reading test scores in the country. Additionally, just 9% of students do not graduate from high school in four years–the second lowest rate after Iowa.
Connecticut, Virginia, New Jersey, and Minnesota round out the top five states for education. All four of these states have high school graduation rates above 90%.
The state with the worst schools is Louisiana. Just 78% of students in Louisiana graduate from high school in four years–the third lowest rate of any state. Students in the state also tend to score below average on standardized tests.
The states with the best teachers
It’s a good time to be a teacher.
According to a new ranking, the best states for teachers are Oklahoma, Illinois, and Michigan. The worst? Louisiana, Hawaii, and South Carolina.
The ranking, from personal finance website WalletHub, looked at 26 different factors to come up with its state-by-state list. Among them: the quality of the teaching force, the average starting salary for teachers, and the number of students per teacher.
Oklahoma came out on top in two of those categories—the quality of its teaching force and the average starting salary for teachers—and in the top 10 in several others. Illinois was second overall, thanks to its high ranking in both the quality of its teaching force and the number of students per teacher. Michigan came in third place.
At the other end of the spectrum, Louisiana was dead last in WalletHub’s ranking. It was also near the bottom—49th out of 50 states—in both the quality of its teaching force and average starting salary for teachers. Hawaii wasn’t much better, coming in 47th place overall; South Carolina was 48th.
The states with the best resources
One important factor in a state’s educational success is the number of resources available to its schools. This includes everything from funding to the availability of qualified teachers. In general, states with more resources tend to have higher test scores and graduation rates.
So which states have the best resources for their schools? The answer may surprise you. Here are the ten states with the highest per-pupil spending, according to data from the U.S. Census bureau:
1. New York
2. Alaska
3. Connecticut
4. Wyoming
5. Vermont
6. New Hampshire
7. Massachusetts
8. Rhode Island
9. Maine
10. Hawaii

-The percentage of new teachers who are not “highly qualified”
-The number of teachers who are teaching outside of their subject area
-The number of teachers who are teaching in schools that have a high concentration of poverty
-The teacher turnover rate
The states with the worst resources
There are many states that are struggling when it comes to education. These states have a lack of resources, and they rank low in many important measures.
Some of the worst states for education include Alabama, Arizona, Arkansas, Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Idaho, Indiana, Kansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Nevada, New Mexico, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, and West Virginia.
These states have large populations of students who are not proficient in reading or math. They also have high dropout rates and low graduation rates. Many of these states also have experienced budget cuts that have led to larger class sizes and fewer resources for teachers and students.
